JOSEPH ROBERTS
Founding Eagle, Joseph Roberts, was raised in Harlem, New York and graduated of Sarah Lawrence College. His specialty was leading vulnerable individuals, most especially inner city youth and ex-offenders, to become self-reliant, contributing citizens. He passed on to a higher vantage point, at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx, at 8.0 p.m. on August 18 2007. Joe was a proud Eagle dedicated to helping others.
He made a tremendous impact in many forums throughout New York State. He will especially be remembered for his 2005 visit to New Zealand, where he and John Wareham were discussion leaders at a remarkable Eagles weekend symposium for New Zealand's two most violent gangs, Black Power and the Mongrel Mob. The reverberations from those discussions were heard around the country and pronounced "a miracle" by the New Zealand Herald. Joe's opening will always forever etched in my memory," said John Wareham: "He looked over those two warring factions, and after a long pause, quoted Malcolm X: "You should want for your brother, what you want for yourself." In fact, Joe always sought for his brothers, sisters and extended family and friends what he wanted for himself -- an informed, caring, decent life, and friends to share his high ideals. As we all know, he achieved that, and so very much more.
